Beauty Pop, Vol. 1 - Kiyoko Arai The brusque, self-confident heroine is a nice change from the shoujo standard, though I have significant qualms about a series based around a competition between our heroine and a group of aspiring beauticians.

The rating would be slightly higher, except the Viz translation describes the ugly hair of one girl as "nappy," which ... no. That phrase is never used to describe anything but the hair of black women. Frizzy would have been fine, tangled fine, nappy ... makes me want to tear the book in half and throw in the street. Seriously. What the hell were the translators thinking?
