Gilbert and Gubar's The Madwoman in the Attic after Thirty Years

Chime - Franny Billingsley For most of the book I thought my reaction to this would be the same as my reaction to The Folk Keeper: here's another well-written fantasy novel with many elements I usually like, which most of my friends do like, which just ends up leaving me cold. Appreciative but unloving. I think it took Briony beginning to recover for me to love it; without the recovery it is just too painfully familiar a depiction of depression and self-hatred resulting from emotional abuse.

Distinctive prose style, although how distinctive is hard to get across in short excerpts; much of the strangeness is in the repetition of the off-kilter but evocative descriptions.
